Fascial Stretch Therapy (FST)

FST is a form of assisted stretch therapy on the table that can help increase your flexibility, reduce aches and pains, and improve athletic performance while making your workouts more effective. FST is very different than what we think of as traditional stretching or bodywork, in that it is more functional and dynamic. Unlike traditional stretching or bodywork that only attempts work on muscles, FST engages the entire myofascial system by targeting muscles as well as their neighboring joints, ligaments, tendons, and bones.
Fascia, the spider web like connective tissue found in, around, and between the joints, muscles, and ligaments is the most prevalent tissue in the body. The health and function of your muscles, joints, arteries, veins, brain, and spinal cord are all a direct result of the condition of your fascia. FST helps to “unwind” fascia, which is full of nerves, reducing pressure between joints and the pain associated with it, while releasing joint-lubricating synovial fluid that improves the flexibility of muscles.

What to Expect:

During a FST session, a certified therapist moves the body in undulating spiral diagonal patterns known as stretch waves, paired with traction to access the joint capsule, the deepest level of fascia. Breathing is synchronized with stretch waves for greater efficiency and an additional therapeutic effect. This pain-free therapy allows your body to relax and receive greater benefits versus traditional bodywork, like deep tissue or Rolfing, that is often painful and where the body can become guarded.
Fascial Stretch Therapy is a pain-free, relaxing, and easy and convenient form of bodywork. Clients stay fully-clothed and remain passive as the therapist performs the assisted stretches. There is no use of massage oils or creams. Clients will leave a session feeling renewed and relaxed.

As the Director of Instruction and Senior Pilates Instructor at Maiden Lane Studios, and for as long as I can remember, I’ve been interested in movement, anatomy, and helping others. Teaching Pilates and barre have both been great conduits for pursuing these interests, but now with the addition of Fascial Stretch Therapy (FST) under my belt, I’ve able to provide an even more therapeutic approach to helping others move and feel better.
When I was training for my first half-marathon, I incorporated regular FST sessions to my cross-training routine, and credit the success of that first race to these sessions. FST helped with the recovery after long runs, as well as helped me maintain proper alignment and connection to my body. With these positive results, I knew I had to obtain my advanced certification in FST.
FST is a comprehensive form of stretching that not only works to lengthen tight muscles, but more importantly it is a system that works from the core joints of the hips and shoulders and then into sheath of fascial tissue that surrounds muscle. Similar to Pilates, this concept of working from the core first is functional and holistic and the results from every session is staggering.
