Introduction to our 8 Weeks of Running Journal, with Kelsey – Maiden Lane Studios Director of Instruction & Senior Pilates and Barre Instructor
It’s running season in San Francisco! As our Indian summer approaches, we can’t help but want to be outside more, shed a couple layers of clothing, and be much more active. Outdoor running (feels funny to have to say that) is one of the best ways to enjoy the weather and work on your cardiovascular endurance at the same time.
Along with the great weather, comes some fun runs and races to go with it. One of the bigger ones is the Nike Women’s Half Marathon on October 19th, taking place just outside our orange awning on Union Square. Another fun race, with plenty of obvious perks, is the Healdsburg Wine Country Half Marathon on October 25th.
Running has never been the sport of choice for Kelsey (Maiden Lane Studios’ Director of Instruction and Senior Pilates & Barre Instructor). And after two knee surgeries and years of playing high impact sports, she laughed at the idea of running more than a couple of miles, much less a half-marathon. This past April something changed all of that and she signed up for the Rock n’ Roll Half Marathon to help fundraise for a charity she volunteers for.
Her reason to participate in this marathon was primarily to raise awareness for the group’s cause – not really running a full 13 miles. However, much to her surprise and minimal training, she ended up running the entire race through the hilly terrain of San Francisco. She gives credit for the ability to complete this race to the Pilates, barre, and yoga cross-training she gets to do weekly at MLS, along with a healthy competitive drive she’s had since childhood.
Needless to say, she’s now caught a bit of the running-bug and wants to see how well she’ll perform when she has a full training plan in place. So, over the next 8 weeks, we’ll be following Kelsey as she prepares for the Healdsburg Half Marathon on October 25th.
Please join us as we track Kelsey’s training regimen leading up to the Marathon. We’ll follow her runs, understand the importance of her cross training, and delve into the best nutrition to help keep her on pace, starting the first week of September.
